The mission of the Estonian Museum Association is to contribute to the preservation of our common cultural heritage and the sustainable development of museums by valuing, developing and sustaining the profession of museum workers.
We connect, develop and recognise museum professionals and help build a strong museum sector.
The Estonian Museums Association was founded on 15 November 1988. Its members are professionals working in state, municipal, public-law and private museums. The association has nearly 470 members. It is governed by a board, while its day-to-day work is managed by an executive director.
Advocacy for the museum sector is a key part of the association’s work. We also publish Muuseum magazine and organise the nationwide Museum Night, a spring excursion for museum professionals and a summer school for museum educators. We hold an annual general meeting and organise the annual museum conference in cooperation with ICOM Estonia.
The association presents the EMMA museum souvenir award and, in cooperation with the National Heritage Board, the annual museum awards. We also select the Museum Friend of the Year and organise a range of training courses and information sessions.
One of our major initiatives has been the launch of the nationwide Museum Card.
